St. John Chapel Policies
St. John Chapel welcomes you and asks that persons involved in wedding festivities respect this Holy and Sacred place in all visits to The Retreat Center at St. John's. The celebration of weddings taking place at the St. John Chapel are under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Detroit, therefore it is a liturgy of the Catholic Church. While we will make every effort to accommodate special ceremony requests, we must adhere to the guidelines set by the Worship Office of the Archdiocese.
 
Wedding Rehearsal
Our wedding coordinator will contact the bride three months prior to the wedding date to schedule the rehearsal. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday*.
*if no weddings are scheduled on Friday
 
Marriage License
It is necessary to obtain a marriage license from the County Clerk of the county in which either applicant resides. If both parties scheduled to marry at St. John Chapel are non-residents of Michigan, the applicants must apply in Wayne County for a marriage license. There is a three-day waiting period after the application before the license may be issued and used. A marriage license is void unless the Marriage is solemnized within 33 days from the date of application. Do not apply more than 33 days or less than 3 working days from your wedding date. The marriage license issed by the county must be given to the wedding coordinator at the wedding rehearsal.
 
Use of Candles
The use of candles is limited to those supplied in the sanctuary provided by St. John Chapel.
 
Your Chapel Time
On your wedding day, you have use of the Chapel for two hours: one-half hour before the ceremony, one hour for the ceremony and one-half hour after the ceremony for photographs. Due to multiple-scheduled weddings, this time frame must be adhered to.
 
Guest Musicians
It is required that you use our staff or cantors and keyboardist for your ceremony. You may have a family member or friend sing or play a prelude and/or communion reflection but our Music Director will need to approve them.
 
Recorded music is not permitted in the chapel.
 
Bride's Dressing Room
A dressing room is available for the bride and her attendants one hour prior to the ceremony.
 
Rice, Confetti, etc
Throwing of rice, flower petals, birdseed or paper confetti or other items is not allowed in the St. John Chapel or The Retreat Center at St. John's property.
 
Alcoholic Beverages, Illegal Drugs
These items are not allowed in the Bridal Dressing Room, during the Rehearsal or prior to the Wedding Ceremony.  The Retreat Center at St. John's is a Non-Smoking Facility.
 
Florist - Chapel Decorations
Sanctuary flower arrangements may be placed in the two holders provided behind the alter. The containers are 8 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep.
 
Garland or pew ribbons must be fastened to the pews only with rubber bands or ribbon. Tape, wire, clips, tacks, staples or nails may not be used.
 
Petals or flowers of any kind may not be strewn anywhere in the chapel.
 
Aisle runners may not be used.
 
Remove all boxes, wrappings, containers and equipment before departing.
 
No equipment, flowers or decorations may be brought into the Chapel until 30 minutes prior to the ceremony.
Photographers & Videographers
No equipment is to be placed near or pictures taken from the Sanctuary, Eucharistic Chapel, or  Musician area.     
       
All equipment is to be placed so as not obstruct the view of the congregation.
 
Except during the processional and recessional, the photographer/videographer position must be stationary and unobtrusive.  It is not permitted for a photographer/videographer to move around during the ceremony.  Remain behind the entrance to the second bank of pews.
 
No equipment is permitted to be brought into the Chapel until 30 minutes prior to the ceremony.  No storage cases or extra equiptment are allowed in the aisles. These items may be stored in the last pew at the back of the Chapel.
 
All pictures will be within the bounds of decorum as befitting this sacred space. The photographers, videographers and wedding party will remain standing at all times. Sitting or reclining on the floor of the Chapel is not allowed.
 
There is a quarter-inch high impedance out-put at the rear of the Chapel for your convenience. 
 
The Waterfall Garden and the West Gazebo, on either side of the Chapel, may be used for pictures.  Please keep the noise level to a minimum as other weddings may be in progress in the Chapel.
